Practice summer holidays from 20 July to 7 August
The practice remains closed for these three weeks. The answering machine gives the number of the emergency cover service in the Appenzell region. Check-ups and dental hygiene before the holidays are best booked by the end of June.
New digital X-ray unit in treatment room 2
Since the beginning of June we have been working with a digital sensor instead of film. The radiation dose is significantly lower and the image appears immediately on the screen next to the chair. So you can see exactly what we are talking about.
Additional dental hygiene appointments on Friday mornings
Because the waiting time had risen to over two months, Sandra Brunner has increased her workload. We now also offer dental hygiene appointments on Friday mornings. The waiting time is therefore back to around three weeks.
Caries prevention for schoolchildren from Herisau
Primary school children receive a fluoride varnish application at their check-up, which we do not charge separately. We also demonstrate brushing technique on a model and give parents brief feedback. Registration works just like any other appointment.
Services
Going home free of complaints
We cover general dentistry for adults and children and work together with a dental technician from the Appenzell region. What we do not do ourselves, such as complex oral surgery, we refer on specifically. Before every treatment you will know what it costs and how long it takes.
Check-up and X-rays
We systematically examine teeth, gums and mucous membranes and record any changes in the findings. If required, we add two digital bitewing images. At the end you receive a verbal summary and, if necessary, a plan for the next steps.
Composite fillings
We remove caries while preserving as much tooth substance as possible and fill with tooth-coloured composite, built up in several layers. We no longer use amalgam. A single-surface filling takes around thirty minutes, and the anaesthetic continues to work for another one to two hours afterwards.
Crowns, bridges and implant restorations
For crowns and bridges we take digital impressions and have the work produced by a laboratory in the region. There are usually two weeks between the impression and fitting, during which you wear a temporary. Dr Lorenz Ammann places implants himself, provided the bone allows it.
Root canal and pain treatment
If the pulp is inflamed, we clean the canals mechanically under rubber dam and seal them tightly. Two sessions are usually needed. Anyone who calls with acute pain gets at least some relief the same day, even if the definitive treatment follows later.

Getting here
Seven minutes from the platform
The easiest way to get here is by train: from Herisau station walk along Bahnhofstrasse and you will reach us within a few minutes. If you come by car, there are customer parking spaces directly in front of the building. A lift takes you to the first floor and the practice is step-free.

From the platforms in Herisau the route leads along Bahnhofstrasse towards the barracks. The way is flat and lit throughout.
By bus
The local buses stop in the centre of Herisau. From there it is a few minutes' walk to the practice.
Parking
There are three marked spaces for patients in front of the building. They are free of charge during your treatment.

Always the same face at the chair
Four people work at the Feldweid, and you will generally be treated by the same person. That saves you repeating your history and saves us guesswork. We record who looks after whom in your file — during holidays or illness, someone takes over who has read your records beforehand.
Dr med dent Lorenz Ammann
Dentist and practice owner, working in Herisau since 2011. He treats adults, places implants and carries out the root canal treatments. At weekends he is usually out cycling in the Appenzell hinterland.
Dr med dent Rahel Signer
Dentist, part of the team since 2018 and responsible for children and adolescents. She deliberately sets aside a full half hour for a child's first visit. She also speaks Italian.
Sandra Brunner
Dental hygienist HF, with the practice since 2015. She looks after recall patients and supports periodontitis treatments over many years. Her explanations of brushing technique are unflinchingly honest.
Nadine Koller
Dental assistant and reception, with us since 2013. She manages the appointment calendar, arranges cost approvals and usually still finds a gap for an emergency. Questions about invoices are in the right hands with her.

Costs, insurance and waiting times
Most calls revolve around the same four points: what it costs, what the insurer pays, how long you wait for an appointment and how a first visit works. We have written the answers down here so you do not have to call for them. Anything still open, Nadine Koller will clarify on the phone.
Does my health insurance cover dental treatment?
Basic insurance covers dental treatment only in exceptional cases, for example after an accident or with certain illnesses. Everything else you pay yourself or through supplementary insurance. In the case of accidents we invoice the accident insurer directly.
How long will I wait for an appointment?
For a check-up we usually find a slot within two to three weeks. For dental hygiene it is currently around three weeks. Acute pain is treated the same day, by prior phone arrangement.
Will I get a cost estimate in advance?
From around CHF 500.– we always draw up a written cost estimate based on the dental tariff. You take it home and decide at your leisure. If you have supplementary insurance, submit it before treatment begins.
Can I pay the invoice in instalments?
Yes, for larger amounts we arrange part payments, usually over three to six months. Raise it before treatment, not only after a reminder. We do not charge any additional fees for this.
How long does a crown or a filling last?
A good composite filling often lasts eight to twelve years with careful care, a crown considerably longer. Oral hygiene and regular check-ups are decisive. If a defect in our work appears within two years, we put it right free of charge.
Qualifications
Documented training at the chair
Everyone who treats you here holds a verifiable qualification and undertakes ongoing training. We schedule training days firmly into the year, which is why the practice is occasionally closed on a Friday. The following titles and memberships can be verified at any time.
Federal diploma in dentistry
Lorenz Ammann and Rahel Signer both hold the federal dental diploma and are registered with the relevant health authority. This authorises them to practise in the canton.
Member of the Swiss Dental Association SSO
We invoice according to the SSO dental tariff, which you can check item by item on every invoice. In the event of disagreement, the SSO expert assessment procedure is open to you.
Dental hygienist HF
Sandra Brunner holds the federally recognised qualification from a college of higher education. She is authorised to carry out periodontitis treatments and record findings independently.
Recognised training practice for dental assistants (Federal VET Diploma)
We train dental assistants up to the Federal VET Diploma. For you this means: apprentices, too, work to verified standards and under supervision.

Nadine Koller answers the phone; on her days off, one of us from the treatment team does. If you call during consultation hours you can leave a message on the answering machine — we call back the same day on working days, usually over lunchtime or towards the end of the day.
You are welcome to contact us about anything: a chipped corner, an invoice you do not understand, a request for a second opinion. Fear of treatment is also a good reason to call.

A check-up before the holidays
If you are travelling in July, it is better to have your check-up now than while you are away. Call us or send an appointment request with two preferred times, and your slot is secure before the practice closes. For dental hygiene, allow around three weeks' lead time.
