Back to school without tears
Rahel Signer looks after children and adolescents and deliberately schedules half an hour for the very first visit, during which there is often no treatment at all. Children may look at everything and move the chair up and down themselves. Parents stay in the room for as long as it helps the child.
First visit to get acquainted
We count the teeth, move the chair and let them try out the mirror. There is no drilling at this appointment. This way the child associates the practice with something predictable rather than with pain.
Check-up and fluoride varnish
At the six-monthly check-up we examine milk teeth and erupting permanent teeth. Primary school children then receive a fluoride varnish application at no separate charge. It takes less than five minutes.
Sealing of the molars
The deep fissures of the first permanent molars are particularly prone to caries. We clean them and seal them with a thin resin film. The procedure is painless and requires no anaesthetic.
Milk tooth fillings and accidents
We treat caries in milk teeth with tooth-coloured material and in short sessions so that patience lasts. If a tooth is chipped or knocked out in a fall, come straight in after a quick call. We invoice such cases directly to the accident insurer.

What parents want to know in advance
Before parents make an appointment, they usually want to know the same things: what it costs, how long it takes, whether they can be present and what happens if the child does not cooperate. The answers are here. Anything else we clarify on the phone before you commit.
What does a check-up for a child cost?
A check-up with fluoride varnish is around CHF 90.– to CHF 120.–, depending on the effort involved. The amount is generally borne by the parents, as basic insurance does not cover dental treatment. We tell you the amount in advance.
From what age should my child come?
We recommend a first visit at around two and a half to three years, once the milk dentition is complete. Earlier makes sense if you see discolouration or the child complains about something. An early, harmless first appointment saves a lot later on.
May I stay with my child as a parent?
Yes, you sit next to the chair for as long as the child wants. From school age many prefer to go in alone, and that often works better. We briefly agree this at the start each time.
What if my child won't open their mouth?
Then we stop and try again next time. We do not force any child, because a forced appointment weighs on the next ten years. Sometimes it takes three short attempts instead of one long session.
How long does a children's appointment take?
The first visit takes around thirty minutes, a subsequent check-up about twenty. We deliberately keep fillings short so that concentration lasts. We like to book children's appointments in the morning, when most are more receptive.
Bring the dental record book and vaccination card
For the first appointment, bring the dental record book from the school dental service, along with any earlier X-rays and the insurance card. Call us or send an appointment request stating the child's age, and we will schedule the right amount of time.
